Polyester is a synthetic fibre — polyethylene terephthalate — melt-spun from petroleum feedstock into continuous filaments. Unlike flax or wool it is engineered rather than grown, and its behaviour is the behaviour of a plastic thread: strong, water-repellent, thermoplastic. Our textile table (fashion_data.MATERIALS) scores it on the same eight axes as every natural fibre, and it is the clearest case where the numbers tell you exactly what to expect.
Polyester’s breathability is 0.30 — the lowest of all 31 fabrics we model. Air moves through it poorly, which is why an untreated polyester shirt feels close and airless in heat. More telling is its moisture regain of 0.4% (ISO 6741-1): effectively nothing — only polypropylene, at 0%, is lower. The fibre cannot absorb sweat into itself the way merino (15%) or linen (12%) do, so perspiration stays as liquid on the skin and the cloth feels clammy. This single number explains most complaints about wearing polyester in warm weather.
Where it earns its place is durability and recovery. Wrinkle recovery is 0.90 and packability 0.95, both near the top of the dataset — a polyester garment shrugs off creasing and packs to nothing, which is why it dominates uniforms, travel clothing, and anything that must look the same out of a suitcase as into it. Its warmth of 0.50 is moderate and its formality 0.40 is low: on our scale it reads as casual and functional, not tailored.
Polyester pills, and its pills are stubborn. Where a weak natural fibre sheds its pills, polyester’s high tensile strength keeps the little balls of tangled fibre anchored to the surface — the strength that makes the fibre durable is the same property that keeps the pills attached. It also holds odour: because it regains almost no moisture, skin oils and the bacteria that feed on them bind to the hydrophobic fibre and resist ordinary washing, so a polyester shirt can smell before it looks dirty. And it is thermoplastic — it melts rather than chars near high heat, so a hot iron or an ember marks it permanently. Static cling in dry air is the same electrical story.
Wash cool and iron low or not at all; heat is the enemy. On sustainability our scale rates virgin polyester 3 — the synthetic-heavy tier, made from fossil feedstock and slow to break down. Recycled polyester, scored separately at 2, keeps the same performance numbers (breathability 0.32, regain 0.4%) while cutting the raw-material footprint, which is the reason to prefer it where the look allows. Polyester tops none of our garment podiums, and that is honest: it loses to natural fibres wherever breathability and formality are weighted highly. Its real home is performance and blends — sportswear, linings, rainwear, and cotton or wool mixes where a minority of polyester buys wrinkle resistance and durability without surrendering the hand of the natural fibre.
