Merino is wool from the Merino breed of sheep, spun from fibres far finer and more tightly crimped than ordinary fleece. That fineness is the whole story: it is why a merino base layer sits flat against skin without the prickle most people associate with wool, and why the same fibre behaves nothing like the coarse wool in a winter overcoat. Merino scores 0.80 on breathability (0–1 air-permeability scale) — the highest of any animal fibre we model, well above ordinary wool at 0.55 and cashmere at 0.50. A protein fibre that breathes almost like a plant fibre is unusual, and it is what lets merino work across spring and autumn rather than deep winter alone.
Its moisture regain is 15% (ISO 6741-1, measured at 20 °C and 65% relative humidity) — tied with wool and cashmere for the highest in the dataset. Moisture regain is the mass of water the dry fibre will hold from the air, and 15% means merino absorbs a great deal of vapour before it ever feels wet. That is the physics behind wool’s reputation for staying comfortable when you sweat: the water is bound inside the fibre, not sitting on your skin. Polyester, for contrast, regains 0.4%.
Wrinkle recovery is 0.85 — the best of any natural fibre in our data, ahead of wool (0.80) and cashmere (0.70). Paired with a packability of 0.90, that is why a merino garment can be rolled into a bag, worn, and shed its creases overnight. At a nominal 180 gsm mid-weight it weighs the same as our linen reference, yet its warmth of 0.55 is more than three times linen’s 0.15 — a clean demonstration that fabric weight and warmth are not the same axis.
Merino and cashmere read almost identically on the numbers (both 15% regain, both in the eco-to-mid band of our 1–3 sustainability scale). The difference is in how they wear out. Cashmere’s staple fibres are short and downy, and short fibres work loose and tangle into pills; merino’s longer, springier fibres resist that, so a merino knit generally stays smooth where a cashmere one fuzzes. Both are protein fibres, so both are vulnerable to clothes moths, and both will felt and shrink irreversibly if washed hot or tumble-dried — heat and agitation lock the fibre scales together. That is a genuine failure mode, not merely a laundering preference.
Wash cool and gently, dry flat, and store clean, because moths are drawn to the body oils left in the fibre. Merino’s odour resistance means it needs washing less often than a synthetic of the same use, which is part of why it anchors travel and base-layer wardrobes. In our scoring, merino tops the podium for tailored, formal garments — suits and tuxedos — and for fine knitwear and base layers, the payoff of high wrinkle recovery, real breathability, and a formality reading of 0.70. It is not the fibre for a rugged outer shell, where density and abrasion resistance matter more than drape.
