What actually makes a tuxedo a tuxedo

The defining detail is not the colour — it is the facing. A tuxedo (the British and international term is dinner jacket) is separated from an ordinary dark suit by silk: a satin or grosgrain facing on the lapels, covered buttons, and a matching silk braid running down the outside seam of the trouser. Strip those away and you are left with a suit. In our convention table the tuxedo carries the highest formality value on the whole site — 0.98 out of 1, against 0.85 for a business suit — and one of the highest structure values, 0.95 (fashion_data GarmentSpec, basis = convention).

Where it comes from

The garment descends from the Victorian smoking jacket and the tailless evening coat. The American name is a place name: the short dinner jacket took hold at the Tuxedo Park country club in New York State in the 1880s, worn for informal evening dining in place of the full tailcoat. Across most of the world the same jacket stayed the “dinner jacket,” which is why formal invitations still read black tie rather than tuxedo.

How to judge a good one

Because the tuxedo's structure convention is so high (0.95), the cloth has to hold a clean, still line. In the site's scoring model the term that rewards exactly this is wrinkle_recovery × structure × 1.90 (fashion_space.garment_bias): a fabric that creases and stays creased is penalised hardest on the most structured garments. On a real jacket that translates to a short checklist:

• a canvassed chest (floating horsehair/wool interlining) that rolls softly — not a glued/fused front that bubbles after cleaning;
• lapel facings cut on the grain so the satin catches light evenly across the roll;
• a peak lapel or shawl collar with a single covered button — never the notch lapel and multiple buttons of a business suit;
• trouser braid that matches the lapel facing exactly;
• evening-weight worsted, roughly 250–300 g/m²: heavy enough to hang dead-straight, fine enough to look sleek.

The three fabrics that suit it — and why

The model ranks a tuxedo's fabrics by how close their formality sits to 0.98 and how well they hold structure. Anything more than 0.45 away in formality is not merely marked down — it is actively cut, a −1.60 penalty (fashion_space.garment_bias). That single rule sends every casual and sport fabric to the bottom and leaves a tight cluster of formal wools on top: in a temperate black-tie context the ranking reads tweed, merino, wool, cashmere (fashion_space.rank).

1. Worsted wool (merino). Merino scores wrinkle_recovery 0.85, formality 0.70 and warmth 0.55 at a 180 g/m² reference weight (fashion_data). It springs back, it drapes, and it tailors cleanly — this smooth worsted, not the rougher tweed the raw score also accepts, is the traditional evening cloth (barathea and fine twills belong to the same family).
2. Silk — for the facings. Silk carries the highest formality value in the table, 0.90 (fashion_data). It is not the body of the jacket; it is the satin or grosgrain that faces the lapel and stripes the trouser, and it is the one detail that reads “evening” from across a room.
3. Velvet — the dinner-jacket variant. Velvet (formality 0.72, warmth 0.65, 320 g/m²) is the documented cloth of the smoking jacket and the modern coloured dinner jacket. Its warmth suits an indoor winter event and its weight gives the drape the occasion asks for.
