T Shirt Fabric Guide — By Climate & Occasion

The right fabric for a t shirt depends on climate and occasion. This guide covers 30 climate combinations and 28 occasion pairings.

What actually makes a t-shirt

A t-shirt is a knit, pull-on top with no fasteners, named for the T that its body and sleeves form when it is laid flat. It sits among the lowest-structure garments on the site — structure 0.15, formality 0.20, coverage 0.30 (fashion_data GarmentSpec, basis = convention) — and that is precisely why it is comfortable: nothing is asked to hold a line, the knit simply stretches with the body. The word knit is the key. A t-shirt is jersey — a single knitted fabric — not a woven cloth, and that construction is what lets it move.

Where it comes from

The t-shirt began as underwear. Around the turn of the 20th century it was cut free from the top half of the one-piece union suit as a separate lightweight undergarment, and navies issued a crew-necked cotton undershirt to be worn beneath the uniform. It crossed from under-layer to outer-layer over the middle of the century, as workwear and then as plain casual dress in its own right.

How to judge a good one

Because a t-shirt sits against the skin in the top role, the model scores it on evacuation, not warmth: breathability × 0.50 plus a humidity-weighted moisture term (fashion_space.garment_bias) — the exact inverse of the parka's substance rule. In a warm context the ranking is led by breathable cellulosics: hemp, linen, then canvas and ramie (fashion_space.rank). On a real shirt that maps to a short checklist:

The three fabrics that suit it — and why

  1. Cotton jersey. Cotton is breathability 0.75, moisture_regain 8.5% and 160 g/m² (fashion_data); jersey — the knit itself — sits in the table at packability 0.85 and wrinkle_recovery 0.70. Cotton knitted as jersey is the default t-shirt for good reason: soft, breathable, forgiving of creases.
  2. Linen (or a linen–cotton knit). Linen is the most breathable fibre on the site at 0.95, with 12.0% moisture regain (fashion_data), and it sits at the top of the warm-context ranking. It creases readily (wrinkle_recovery 0.20) — on a t-shirt that is a stylistic choice, not a fault.
  3. Hemp. Hemp scores breathability 0.90 and the same 12.0% moisture regain (fashion_data) and leads the warm-weather ranking at. It is stronger and more durable than cotton, which suits a t-shirt worn hard and washed often.
