A raincoat is an outer shell built to keep water out rather than heat in — coverage over warmth. In our convention table it carries the same low formality as a puffer, 0.30, but higher coverage, 0.70 (it typically drops to the knee), and moderate structure, 0.45 (fashion_data GarmentSpec, basis = convention).
The modern raincoat starts with rubber, not weave. In 1823 the Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh patented a way to waterproof cloth by dissolving rubber in naphtha and sandwiching the solution between two layers of fabric — the origin of the British “mackintosh.” Early rubberised coats went stiff in the cold and tacky in the heat, and smelled of solvent, until vulcanisation — developed independently by Charles Goodyear and Thomas Hancock in the 1840s — stabilised the rubber and made the coats practical for everyday wear. The tightly woven, weatherproofed cotton gabardines and coated synthetics that dominate raincoats today are the direct descendants of that fix.
