A base layer is a mid layer. This guide covers what defines it and which fabrics suit it.
A base layer is the piece worn directly against skin, under everything else — its entire job is moisture management, not warmth by itself. In our convention table it carries the lowest formality on the site, 0.10, the lowest structure, 0.10, and coverage of 0.60 (it typically covers torso and legs both) (fashion_data GarmentSpec, basis = convention). Nothing about a base layer is meant to be seen; everything about it is meant to be felt.
The lineage runs through the union suit, a one-piece knitted wool undergarment common across 19th-century North America and Europe, worn as the innermost layer against cold. Mountaineering and military cold-weather units in the 20th century pushed the next step: purpose-built long underwear in wool and, later, engineered synthetics designed specifically to move moisture away from the skin rather than simply insulate. The modern base layer — merino or a synthetic knit, cut close and seamed to lie flat under other clothing — is the direct descendant of that development, sold now for everyday cold-weather wear as much as for expeditions.
At a formality of 0.10, the base layer's formality-match term, (1 − |formality − 0.10|) × 2.60 (fashion_space.garment_bias), rewards only the least formal fibres in the table, while the layer role's warmth and packability terms do the rest — there is nothing in the formula that asks how the fabric looks, because a base layer is never seen on its own.
